Success story of ‘Kothrud Mitra’

Mr. Sunjjoy Dahake, who was already working in the field of Journalism and newspaper industry, started his first own project by publishing the first issue of fortnightly ‘Kothrud Mitra’ on Jan. 01 - 2004. Newspaper field in those days was not as advanced as it is today. Nearly all the newspapers were black and white. But advertisement was still the only medium to convey the information and to reach the masses.

Considering that Pune city was expanding fast, Small and medium scale professionals and business people in the suburbs could not afford to spend for advertisements in the big newspapers. It was also logistically difficult for both professionals and customers.

For example, an advertisement from a businessman from Kothrud in the big newspaper will reach all the customers in central Pune, as well as Sinhgad Road, Dhankawadi, Hadpsar, Yerwada, Aundh or Pimpri-Chinchwad. But people had to spend a lot for that and the response would be possibly zero.

Sunjjoy Dahake quickly realized the difficulty of the professionals from Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Erandwane and Paud Road. He also realized their need to have a local publication for advertising and reaching the customers of their own area.

Very soon Sunjjoy Dahake started his own newspaper house in 2001 and also started publishing his first weekly ‘Pune Vaibhav’ in 2002 which was exclusively for the professionals in Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Erandwane and Paud Road vicinity.

As the concept of publishing a weekly newspaper exclusively for specific suburb was new and by publishing many subjects - giving them due justice, which were neglected by big newspapers, ‘Pune Vaibhav’ was given a grand welcome by one and all. ‘Pune Vaibhav’ also gained a wide publicity, when a special issue on ‘Gunthewari’ was published, which was then a new subject for Pune people.

‘Pune Vaibhav’ was gaining more publicity and hence it’s periodicity was changed to fortnightly from weekly in 2003. The print order was increased to 30,000 and circulation area was also expanded to Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Erandwane including Paud Road.

As it was already very well known being a weekly of Kothrud area, it’s fortnightly format was also welcomed and professionals in the area confidently released their advertisements in ‘Pune Vaibhav’. Readers also responded whole-heartedly and effectively a full flow of advertisements was started from professionals and business people in Kothrud area.

The idea of separate fortnightly newspaper for different suburbs in Pune city was pushing strongly and it resulted in the publication of fortnightly with a new title ‘Kothrud Mitra’ with a bang. The print order of 50,000 was a bold step in that period.

Readers also welcomed the idea of free circulation of ‘Kothrud Mitra’ and business people also were quite happy to have a trustworthy and privileged medium for advertising and reaching the customers in the range of 5-6 kilometers around them.

The success story of ‘Kothrud Mitra’ was not a miracle by itself. It was a result of tireless efforts from Sunjjoy Dahake. Since he started the publication business, Sunjjoy Dahake did practically scanned Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Erandwane and Paud Road area by meeting readers and business people in the vicinity, vicious marketing and constant monitoring with the help of circulation team for all those years.

‘Kothrud Mitra’ has always retained its ‘Number One’ position during this journey of last 17 years. Advertisements in ‘Kothrud Mitra’ are read like regular news and articles and therefore attract grand response also.

‘Kothrud Mitra’ is seen as the unique medium to reach maximum people in most reasonable expenses. It has always been a major shareholder for the success of many professionals and business people. If not enough, they are also happy to give a credit of their success to ‘Kothrud Mitra’.

Considering the grand response of professionals and businessmen along with readers over the years, ‘Kothrud Mitra’ has proved its worth in the market. Not only that, success story of ‘Kothrud Mitra’ has underlined the need of separate newspapers exclusively of this kind in various suburbs in Pune city. Sunjjoy Dahake is also taking steps in this direction. But that is another story.
